Did you know ...

where the worlds first rocket took off into space?

In Peenemünde in Germany. Between 1936 and 1945 the testing station here was one of the most up-to-date technology centres in the world. In 1942 German engineers succeeded in sending the world's first rocket into space. In the neighbouring experimental station belonging to the German "Luftwaffe", revolutionary new missiles were tested. That said, all research was subordinated to political aims. More than almost any other site, Peenemünde illustrates the ambivalence implicit in the use of modern technology. This theme, along with historical developments, makes up the majority of the exhibition in the Peenemünde historical and technical information centre, housed in the power station of the old military experimental station.
