Over the many decades of its history large amounts of copper and tin ores were extracted from the workings of the Levant Mine in Cornwall. The engine house, built in the first half of the 19th century, is perched on a cliff above the Atlantic Ocean. The underground galleries extended to a considerable distance and to a depth of 350 fathoms (640 m) under the sea. The beam engine was installed in 1840 and is steamed daily in the summer season.
