where to find the first salt mine of the world?

From the Middle Ages up to the 20th century the people of Wieliczka in Poland continuously mined salt. That's why the local mine was called Magnum Sal. For centuries salt ranked among the country's most valuable ressources. Today the site symbolises the heydey of salt boiling, and having gained the UNESCO World Heritage status it is acknowledged as a top industrial monument. A highlight for visitors are the sculptures carved out of the salt down in the underground halls.
