Did you know ...

when the first iron-hulled ship was launched?

The SS Great Britain, the world’s largest ship at that time, began her maiden voyage on 26 July 1845. She was the first ocean-going, iron-hulled, screw-driven vessel. The ship looks back to an eventful past. After transporting passengers and cargo it was used as a storage hulk in the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands. In 1970 it was towed back to Bristol for extensive restoration. Today visitors are able to see the first class dining room, the steerage quarters and the engine room.
