Het object
The Museu Agbar de les Aigües is situated in the premises of the Central Cornellà, at the original plant which was constructed to extract water from the Llobregat aquifer, and pump it to the city of Barcelona, and which has been working constantly ever since.
The Central Cornellà is a prime location for a museum dedicated to water. The plant, which opened in 1909, draws and pumps water from the Llobregat river’s aquifer.
The coexistence of an operational industry, a highly valuable heritage and a desire to raise awareness about water has turned the Museu Agbar de les Aigües into a prime venue for discovering, exploring and experiencing the importance of this familiar yet extraordinary substance.
The Modernista brick buildings and the steam-driven machinery, both of which are now part of the museum’s permanent exhibition, offer a historical, technological and environmental take on water. Through a number of interactive modules and audiovisual resources, the exhibition allows visitors to observe the properties of water as a substance and to get an insight into its relationship with the territory.
