Door de industrialisatie met haar steeds beter wordende materialen ijzer en beton ontstonden er voor architecten en ingenieurs ongekende nieuwe mogelijkheden. Tegelijkertijd betekende dat een revolutie voor de woningbouw aangezien het de duizenden toegestroomde werknemers in de florerende fabrieksgebieden nog aan menswaardige huisvesting ontbrak.
