Itinéraire thématique des mines
Le charbon des mines européennes et américaines était le combustible universel de l’industrialisation. Pourtant, le rôle joué par les innovations techniques dans l’histoire des mines est insignifiant. Cela s’explique par l’offre constamment excédentaire de main d’œuvre : les propriétaires des mines n’avaient en effet qu’à engager toujours plus d’ouvriers pour atteindre une plus grande capacité d’extraction. C’est pour la même raison qu’ils ont longtemps pu se dérober au problème des conditions de travail désastreuses des mineurs.
