Avec l’industrialisation, des possibilités nouvelles et inattendues s’offraient aux architectes et aux ingénieurs, notamment grâce à l’amélioration constante de matériaux comme le fer et le béton. Parce que les milliers d’ouvriers qui affluaient dans les régions industrielles en plein boom n’avaient pas de logements dignes de ce nom, l’industrialisation révolutionna également la construction des appartements.
