Summerlee is a heritage park with a large exhibition hall whose aim is ‘to preserve and interpret the history of the local coal, iron, steel and engineering industries, and of the communities that depended upon them’. It is located in Coatbridge, once known as ‘the iron burgh’. Features include the archaeological remains of the Summerlee furnaces of 1835, from which 6 m of slag and other debris have been removed, a restored pithead, a stretch of the Monkland Canal, and a row of miners’ houses.
