The Site

The Argentella silver mine lies on the bay of Crovani on the west coast of Corsica, within the district of Calinzana. The mine was a source of argentiferous galena (i.e. silver-bearing lead ore) and was operated at various periods in the nineteenth century, and finally for a short period from 1906 by a company called La Societe des Mines de Prunelli. The principal remains are a high brick ventilation shaft and a very substantial three-store building that was probably used for concentrating and dressing ore.
