Windmills at Kinderdijk

The 19 windmills at Kinderdijk comprise the most impressive historic landscape of wind-power in Europe, and are a powerful evocation of the landscape of the western provinces of the Netherlands in the period before steam was applied to work drainage pumps. Kinderdijk lies at the confluence of the Rivers Lek and Noord, and the dike from which it takes its name follows the right bank of the latter. There are two ranges of 18th century windmills, a total of 19 in all, which are ranged on either side of drainage canals. A walkway called the Molenkade gives access to the mills, some of which are open to visitors.
