Wentworth Woodhouse

Wentworth Woodhouse is one of the finest and grandest Georgian Houses in England.  It is one of the most expensive ever built and ranks amongst Britain’s largest and most important country houses.  It was home of the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam who built Elsecar, made money from mining and industry and was famous for his racehorses. Wentworth Woodhouse  has always been something of a mystery as few people know the house, and fewer have witnessed its palatial grandeur. The current house was built by the 1st Marquis of Rockingham and incorporates part of an earlier manor house built in 1630.

An incredible house to visit –contrast it with the Elsecar Heritage Centre and the workers houses around it, and learn what happened when coal was dug underneath the building and from the parkland up to the edge of the garden. Links to Wortley Hall and Wentworth Castle too.
