Soufli, a town 65 km north-east of Alexandroupolis and a short distance from the Turkish border, was celebrated for its wine, spirits and cooked meats, and for ox carts that were manufactured there for the whole of Thrace, but above all for its silk. Mulberry trees thrive in the region, and sericulture and silk manufacturing were especially prosperous in the nineteenth century before the establishment of the present border with Turkey in 1922 cut off Soufli from areas that had been its hinterland.
The museum, which is supported by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, has displays relating to the making of silk in antiquity, the rearing of silk worms and the manufacture of silk fabrics and thread. A further section places the rise and decline of the industry in the region in its broader political and economic context.
