Museum of Fish Canning

From the 1890s until the 1960s the principal industry of Stavanger on the west coast of Norway was the canning of fish, particularly herring, sardines and brisling that were exported to many other countries. The museum of canning, part of the city museum service, is located in a former factory at 88 Ovre Strandgate. The machinery remains in working condition and from time to time ovens are re-activated to smoke brisling.
