Écomusée de l’Avesnois

Fourmies was the principal centre of the woollen textile industry in France in the second half of the 19th century. The ecomusée which portrays the region’s history includes a display in the single-storey former Prouvost-Masurel wool-spinning mill which worked between 1874 and 1970. All the principal stages in the manufacture of woollen cloth are explained in exhibitions that include more than 100 machines, mostly from the period 1880-1900, and from mills in the region. The écomusée has eight other branches, including water-powered corn and wood-turning mills, and a museum of glass making.
