Royal Mint

The visit to Real Casa de Moneda invites you to learn the thrilling history of this building built by Felipe II. You will learn about the minting processes which were used here over three hundred years in the fabrication of money.

Display panels explain the different historical stages of production, as well as the process which the metal goes through during its transformation into money. In the Blacksmithing room you can admire recreations of the hammer, the forge, the lathe and the rolling mill. These machines function under the power of the river Eresma, this is made possible thanks to the help of three magnificent Hydraulic wheels. In the blacksmithing room a video explains the function of the rolling mills and coining machines that stretch the metal and mint the money.

In the exterior the visitor will learn about the system of canals and the three hydraulic wheels that power the machinery used in the minting process.
