Fokis Mining Park „Vagonetto“

The history of bauxite in Greece dates back in the beginning of the 20th century (1920s) when the first explorations took place in the Oiti-Ghiona-Parnassos area. In mid 1960s, Vagonetto’s Tunnel 850 opened as a working gallery, one of the first for the mining of bauxite in mountain Ghiona. The gallery was exhausted after a decade.

About 30 years since the gallery’s closure, the tunnel and the surrounding area were reconstructed to host the only thematic park and museum of its kind in Greece. Today, it welcomes thousands of visitors from the country and abroad, who get on the original train, which was used to transfer miners, and travel at the heart of the mountain where they listen to miners’ conversations. After the underground tour visitors are transported back to the museum and walk around in the exhibition hall that consists of the Geological, Topographical Survey, Lab and Rehabilitation rooms. They can then complete their mining experience by taking an “interactive” part in the process of mining in the digital-technology wing. The site is in a majestic scenery in the Greek mainland between two mountains and shares the grounds with the active mining company “European Bauxites”.
