The International Petanque Tournament under ground in the Historic “Guido” Coal Mine in Zabrze

The event took place within the frameworks of the French Culture Days in Zabrze, under the patronage of the Mayor of Zabrze. For the first time in Poland, and perhaps in the World, semi-finals and finals of this game were played 320 metres below the ground – in the mine gallery!

4 teams, of two players each, took part in the final competition. They were appointed after preliminaries held the day earlier. The competition was very fierce (as evidenced by the results of a 13:12, 13:10), and the winner was a Polish-Slovak team. The event was so successful that it was decided to organize in the near future in the “Guido” Mine the next international Pentaque tournament.
Petanque is a traditional French game of ancient origin whose current form developed in the South of France. The game is typically played with steel balls called boules. That is why Petanque is also known as Boule. It is particularly popular in France (Provence), but also other, especially Mediterranean countries. It is also increasingly popular in Poland.
