The landscape of the Sagene area on the banks of the River Akerselva in Oslo illustrates as well as anywhere in Europe the process of industrialisation in urban areas in the 19th century. The first cotton mills were established alongside the river in the 1840s and were followed by engineering works and sawmills. Among the surviving buildings from the early stages of industrialisation are an 18th century farmhouse converted into accommodation for skilled English workers, a 3-storey, 5-bay wooden apartment block of 1848, and several single storey cabins, dating from before 1857 when the construction of new timber buildings was forbidden Oslo. They stand amongst apartment blocks in the neo-classical style, mostly designed by architects trained in Germany. The nearby Museum of Science and Technology has displays relating to industry in all parts of the country, including one that relates directly to the Sagene area, and includes turbines, steam engines and power looms.
