La révolution industrielle entraîna rapidement un changement radical dans les transports – en échange, le ronflement des nouveaux bateaux à vapeur et la fumée des locomotives accéléraient l’industrialisation. Le changement commença avec les routes fluviales qui, depuis des siècles, s’étaient avérées les plus efficaces pour assurer le transport des marchandises.
