Itinéraire thématique du textile

Les fuseaux qui virevoltent par milliers sur les machines à corder des fabriques de coton sont devenus l’incarnation même de l’industrialisation. Ce sont les moulins à coton britanniques, les « cotton mills », qui furent à la fois les pionniers et les archétypes de la révolution industrielle. La toute première usine de textile fabriquait cependant du fil de soie, l’usine de Derby, construite en 1720 : plus de 26000 fuseaux actionnés par la force hydraulique tournaient sur ses cinq étages. Depuis le Moyen âge, l’Italie fut le haut-lieu du traitement de la soie, et c’est par conséquent d’Italie que provenaient les machines.
