L’ère préindustrielle du textile était caractérisée par la production artisanale à domicile. Le père de famille était assis derrière le métier à tisser, tandis que les femmes se chargeaient de filer le coton. Un entrepreneur leur livrait la matière première et organisait la vente des produits, bien souvent dans des destinations déjà très éloignées. Dès le 16e siècle, la fabrication d’étoffes, la première industrie d’Europe, était généralement organisée selon ce principe.
