Ce n’est que vers la fin du 19e siècle, au moment de la deuxième poussée de l’industrialisation, que les terrils de stériles dénudés, les halls d’usine recouverts de charbon, les rangées infinies de maisons ouvrières grises et l’acier des voies ferrées ont commencé à former d’immenses paysages industriels. Pourtant, les hommes ont commencé bien avant à créer de nouveaux paysages, et pas seulement là où de précieuses ressources minières les y invitaient.
