Itinéraire thématique du fer et de l’acier

Deux étapes mènent du minerai de fer au fer et à l’acier, les deux matières clé de l’époque industrielle : la fonte des minerais dans le haut fourneau donne du fer pur ; l’affinage de la fonte, c’est-à-dire la diminution de la teneur en carbone, donne ensuite du fer forgé ou de l’acier. Les deux étapes dépendent du combustible : le charbon de terre naturel n’est pas adapté à la fabrication du fer, parce que ses oligo-éléments, surtout le soufre, abîment le métal.
