Au 18e siècle, il y avait près de mille moulins au bord de la rivière Zaan, près de la métropole commerciale Amsterdam. Ils transformaient le bois, la farine et le papier, de même que les matières premières provenant d’outre-mer, comme le tabac ou le cacao.
