Did you know ...

the place where, for the first time, a manufacturer created better living conditions for his workers?

To live in New Lanark, Scotland, at the beginning of the 19th century was a fortunate position. The town, then characterised by its cotton industry, happened to witness an entrepreneur named Robert Owen who took his responsibility as employer seriously. After having inherited a spinning mill in 1800 he successfully introduced several measures to better the lot of his employees, thereby proving to be a pioneer with great foresight. Thanks to him Lanark became a place not only with good working conditions, but living standards.
