The St Michael blast furnace, in the forest of St Hubert, was built in 1771 by Dom Nicolas Spirlet, the last abbot of the nearby monastery, worked until 1942, and was designated an historical monument in 1952. It is one of the best-preserved in Europe, and retains its stack, casting house and charcoal barn. Displays in a timber-framed house include fire backs, a relief plaque of the Last Supper, nail-making equipment and a dog-powered hammer. It forms part of the museum service of the province of Luxembourg, and has been integrated since 1977 with the adjacent Musee de la vie rural en Wallonie, an open air museum displaying 50 buildings characteristic of the region.
